90MnCrV8 (1.2842)

EN ISO 4957

Annealed (+A)

Steel grade 90MnCrV8, as defined by the ISO 4957 standard, is a high-quality cold-work tool steel renowned for its durability, dimensional stability, and versatility in industrial applications. This steel grade, also known as 1.2842 in the DIN EN system or AISI O2 in the American standard, is widely used in the production of precision tools and components that demand high hardness, wear resistance, and edge retention After heat treatment, typically involving oil quenching at 760–820°C followed by tempering, it can achieve a hardness of up to 64 HRC (Rockwell C scale), making it ideal for applications requiring sharp cutting edges and wear resistance. However, its tempering resistance is relatively low, meaning it does not perform well under excessive heat, which can lead to softening. Its low deformation during heat treatment makes it a go-to choice for precision tools and measuring instruments.

Precision Measuring Tools: The steel’s dimensional stability makes it ideal for manufacturing gauges, micrometer screws, and other measuring instruments that require high precision and resistance to wear.

Woodworking and Plastic Processing: It is used in woodworking milling cutters, circular knives, and blades for cutting paper, tobacco, and leather. Additionally, 90MnCrV8 is employed in molds for pressing plastic and rubber parts, where its machinability and wear resistance are advantageous.

Industrial Blades and Dies: The steel is a common choice for blades in the paper and metal industries, as well as for blanking dies and tooling dies that do not require extended life but still demand reliability.

Specialized Components: 90MnCrV8 is also used in hand reamers, spindles, sliders, rails, and cold chamfering tools, where its combination of hardness and moderate toughness ensures durability under mechanical stress.

90MnCrV8 shares similarities with other cold-work tool steels, such as 1.2510 (100MnCrW4), which contains tungsten for enhanced wear and tempering resistance.
